StagePlay Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
StagePlay ("the app", "we", "us") is a writing and production-planning tool for stage and screen scripts, available in the browser at stageplay.ink and as native apps. This policy explains what data StagePlay handles and why. It is written to be honest and specific — please read it.
The short version
- Your scripts are yours. We never sell your data, show you ads, or use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
- On the native apps, an account is optional. Without one, everything stays on your device. In the browser, an account is required so your work is saved.
- Sharing is always your choice. A script is only visible to others if you create a share link or invite a collaborator, and you can revoke either at any time.
- We collect anonymous usage counts and crash reports to find bugs and understand which features are used. They contain no scripts, no names, no email addresses and no device identifiers, and you can turn them off.
Data stored on your device
The native apps store your scripts, drafts, production and planning data, and app preferences (theme, editor settings, onboarding answers such as your writing goal, and your writing streak and stats) in the app's private storage. If you don't sign in, none of this leaves your device. Deleting the app removes it, so please export anything that matters to you.
Your account (optional on native apps, required in the browser)
If you create an account we use Firebase Authentication (a Google service) to sign you in with Google or with an email address and password. We store your email address, display name and a unique user ID.
When you're signed in, your scripts and their production and planning data are synced to Cloud Firestore (also a Google service) so they are available on your other devices. Only you — and any collaborators you invite — can access them.
You can delete your account at any time from your profile in the app. Deleting your account deletes your scripts, share links, collaborator entries, reading list and bookmarks from our servers. Comments you left on other people's scripts remain, because they are part of those conversations.
Sharing and collaboration
- Share links. When you create a share link, anyone who can open it (depending on the visibility you choose: public, your team, or named email addresses) can read that script. We count how many times the link is viewed and — anonymously — how far readers get (started, halfway, finished).
- Collaborators. When you invite someone by email, we look up their StagePlay account and record their email and display name on your script's collaborator list so you can see who has access.
- Comments and reactions from readers. Readers can leave feedback on a script and "like" it if you allow this. A comment stores the text, the name shown with it (the reader's account name, or a name they typed), and which line it is attached to. To prevent spam, we keep a one-way hash of the commenter's account ID or IP address for a short cooldown; we never store the IP address itself. A like stores an anonymous identifier only so the same reader can't like twice.
- Readers who sign in. A reader who signs in on a share page can save their reading position, bookmarks (with private notes) and a reading list. This is stored against their own account and is never visible to the script's author. Readers who don't sign in keep this only in their own browser.
Anonymous usage statistics and crash reports
To fix bugs and understand which features are used, the app sends:
- Counts of events such as "a script was created" or "a script was exported", aggregated into daily totals. No identifiers are attached, so we cannot tell who did what.
- Crash reports containing the error message, the technical stack trace, the app version and the platform. They never include your script text.
You can turn both off in the app under Profile → Privacy. The browser version uses no cookies for this and no advertising or analytics cookies at all.
Microphone and voice dictation
StagePlay offers optional voice dictation. The microphone is used only while you are dictating, through your device's built-in speech-recognition service (Apple on iOS and macOS, Google on Android). Depending on your device settings that service may process audio on the device or on the vendor's servers, under Apple's or Google's privacy policies. StagePlay keeps only the transcribed text, as part of your script, and never stores or sends the audio.
Notifications
With your permission, the native apps schedule a local daily writing reminder. Notifications are generated on your device; no notification data is sent anywhere.
Where data is processed
Account and cloud data are processed by Google (Firebase) on servers in the United States. Google acts as our processor under the Firebase data processing terms.
Children
StagePlay is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Your rights
You can access, export (File → Export) and delete your data from within the app at any time. For any other request — including access or deletion under UK/EU GDPR — contact us below.
